MCSC Skeet Events

Event Overview

  • Entrants will shoot up to five standard rounds of skeet and have their scores recorded, with their lowest score dropped if they shoot five rounds. (Max of 100 targets scored, and a max of 125 targets shot)
  • The event may extend across multiple open sessions of the shotgun range to allow entrants multiple opportunities to complete their four rounds, or to spread the completion of their rounds across multiple days.
  • Organized skeet events will not inhibit at-will shooting.
  • A final result bulletin will be made available at the conclusion of the event.
  • Entrants' final score for the event will be the sum of the scores of their rounds, plus their event handicap (as outlined in the Event Procedures).
  • Entrants will be responsible for paying for the cost of their rounds.
  • All entrants will compete as one class, regardless of proficiency, or gauge of gun used.
  • In the event of a tie for champion, first runner-up, or second runner-up, a shootoff will occur as defined in the Event Procedures, to define final classification.

Entrant Criteria and Eligibility

  • Entry shall be open to the following:
  • MCSC members
  • Spouses of members, who have completed a hold harmless/day membership agreement
  • Juniors, as defined by club rules, who are guests of a member and have completed a hold harmless/day membership agreement.

FAQs

Q:        What gauges of shotgun can be used?
A:        Any shotgun gauge 12 or smaller can be used.
Q:        Are there any restriction on shot load?
A:        Shot load may not exceed 1 and 1/8th of an ounce.
Q:        Are there any restriction on shot size?
A:        Shot must be sized 7½ or smaller.
Q:        Are there any limits on shot composition?
A:        Only lead shot may be used.
Q:        Are there any fees to enter?
A:        No.  Entry is free.
Q:        Will there be any score handicap?
A:        Yes.  Info on the handicap methodology can be found on the MCSC website.
Q:        Do I have to shoot all four rounds in one session?
A:        No.  You may spread the completion of your four rounds across any of the event sessions.
Q:        Does the Spring Skeet Event suspend the normal open sessions of the Shotgun Field?<br>
A:        No.

I - Definitions

  1. Valid Target: A thrown target that, in the opinion of the judge, is not any of the following:
  2. Thrown broken
  3. Thrown with an unreasonable delay after the shooter calls for the target to be thrown
  4. Thrown in a manner which, which in the opinion of the judge of the round, the shooter did not have a reasonable chance to shoot (ie: unreasonable distraction, calling of a range cease fire, or unreasonably irregular flight)
  5. Called by the judge of the round to be invalid pursuant to Event Procedures
  6. Invalid Target: A thrown target which is not a valid target.
  7. Dead Target: A valid target that, in the opinion of the judge of the round, has been all of the following:
  8. Broken as the result of a having been validly fired upon
  9. Broken before hitting the ground
  10. Broken before reaching the boundary marker
  11. Lost Target: A valid target that, in the opinion of the judge of the round, is not a dead target.


II - General

  1. Entrants shall not use a shotgun larger than 12 gauge.
  2. Entrants shall not use loads in excess of 507 grains of lead.
  3. Entrants shall comply with all existing MCSC range rules.
  4. Entrants shall reshot their first lost target as their “option”.
  5. Shall an entrant have no lost targets, their “option” shall be taken as a station eight low target.
  6. Entrants may change guns between scored rounds for any reason.
  7. Entrants may change guns during a scored round to a gun of matching or smaller gauge if one of the following occurs:
  8. The gun experiences a mechanical malfunction or failure.
  9. The gun becomes damaged or unsafe.
  10. Injury or medical need of the entrant.
  11. The event organizer may disqualify an entrant from the event for violation of event procedures, or unsportsmanlike conduct.
  12. The event organizer may appoint alternate judges.
  13. The event organizer may empanel a jury of at least three individuals to hear appeals involving unsportsmanlike conduct.
  14. No one shall be appointed as an alternate judge without their consent.
  15. Each scored round will be refereed and judged by the event organizer, or an alternate judge (“the judge of the round”).
  16. Decisions regarding withdrawals, annulments, and disqualifications made by an alternate judge may be appealed to the event organizer.
  17. Decisions regarding withdrawals, annulments, and disqualifications made by the event organizer may be appealed to the event jury, if so empaneled.


III - Scoring

  1. The judge of the round shall contemporaneously judge and score rounds shot by entrants.
  2. Rounds which were not witnessed and recorded by the event organizer, or an alternate judge, shall not be counted.
  3. The total number of dead targets shot by the entrant in a round shall be the entrant’s score for the round.
  4. Failure to shoot at a valid target shall be counted as a lost target unless any of the following are true, in which case the target shall be considered invalid and rethrown:
  5. The shooter failed to shoot due to a malfunction of their shotgun.
  6. The shooter failed to shoot due to defective ammunition.
  7. If, in the opinion of the judge of the round, an entrant failed to complete a round due to a fault of the entrant, the following shall apply:
  8. The total number of dead targets shot by the entrant in said round at the point of their withdrawal shall be the entrant’s score for the round and all unattempted targets marked as lost and the entrants.
  9. The judge of the round shall note that the entrant withdrew on the score sheet.
  10. If, in the opinion of the judge of the round, an entrant failed to complete a round due to force majeure, the following shall apply:
  11. The entrant's participation in that round shall not be counted.
  12. The judge of the round shall note that the entrant’s participation in the round was annulled.
  13. If, in the opinion of the judge of the round, an entrant has violated event procedure or has engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct during the shooting of a round, the following shall apply:
  14. The entrant’s score for the round will be zero.
  15. The judge of the round shall note that the entrant’s participation in the round was disqualified.


IV - Doubles Procedures

  1. Shooters shall first shoot the target thrown from the closest house to their shooting position.
  2. The judge of the round may allow inexperienced shooters to take doubles as a report pair in the place of a true pair.
  3. Shall the first target of a double be invalid, both shall be ruled invalid and the double rethrown.
  4. Shall the second target be invalid, the result of the first target shall be recorded, and the second target rethrown as a single.
  5. Shall the targets, in the opinion of the judge of the round, collide in mid air, both shall be considered invalid and the double rethrown.
  6. Shall the shooter shoot the double out of order, the first target shall be counted lost, and the second target shall be considered invalid and rethrown.
  7. Shall the shooter shoot both targets in one shot, the first target shall be counted dead, and the second target shall be considered invalid and rethrown.


V - Shootoff Procedures

  1. In the event of a tie for champion, first runner-up, or second runner-up, the event organizer shall organize a shootoff to break the tie.
  2. The shootoff will consist of a modified round of skeet, consisting of four doubles on stations three, four and five.
  3. Each shooter shall have discretion as to which target to attempt first when shooting double on station four.


VI - Event Handicap Methodology

  1. Only rounds shot in prior MCSC Skeet Events shall be eligible for consideration when calculating an entrant’s event handicap.
  2. Rounds which were any of the following shall not be eligible for consideration when calculating an entrant’s event handicap:
  3. The entrant is recorded as having withdrawn from the round.
  4. The entrant’s participation in that round was annulled.
  5. The entrant’s participation in that round was disqualified.
  6. Rounds shot by a participant in an event in which their participation was on an exhibitionary basis.
  7. Only entrants which have eight four or more completed eligible rounds shall receive an event handicap.
  8. The following formula shall be be used to calculate an entrant’s handicap:
  9. If an entrant has completed eight or more eligible rounds: Take the sum of the highest six scores of the entrant’s last eight eligible rounds.
  10. If an entrant has completed fewer than eight eligible rounds:  Take the sum of all of the entrant’s eligible rounds.
  11. Divide the result of (a) by either six, or the number of eligible rounds the entrant has completed, whichever is lower.
  12. Multiply the result of (b) by four
  13. Round the result of (c) up to the nearest whole number
  14. Subtract the result of (d) from eighty
  15. If the result of line (e) is less than zero, the handicap shall be zero.  
  16. If the result of line (e) is more than five, the handicap shall be five.  
  17. Elsewise the result of (e) shall be the handicap.
  18. Entrants participating on an exhibitionary basis shall not receive a handicap.
